The Kentucky Pharmacists Political Advocacy Council was established in May of 2006 and unveiled at the 2006 annual meeting of the Kentucky Pharmacists Association. Based on the comments of many Kentucky Pharmacists and the political uncertainty of that period, the KPhA Board of Directors determined that increased political involvement of pharmacists was a must if we were to have any chance of being effective in our efforts to influence positive outcomes of legislation and regulations affecting the business and practice of pharmacy.
In whatever setting you practice pharmacy; there is a business component to your practice. Recent regulations, such as HIPPA, AMP, Medicare Part D, DME accreditation and in community pharmacy, the verification and audits of Health Savings Account and ‘Benny’ card transactions have become actual or threatened added cost of doing business for pharmacy. Where is the voice of pharmacy when proposals such as those listed above are being considered? Are we just too busy with the practice of pharmacy to be aware of and concerned about the outside influences that shape our profession? I want to encourage every pharmacist in Kentucky to get to know your elected officials, local, state and federal. Invite them to your practice settings to show and explain to them what you do and the impact you have on the quality of life for your patients.
We have received many requests for donations to the campaigns of many of the candidates for the Kentucky Senate and the House of Representatives. KPPAC has responded favorably too many of those requests
It is unfortunate, but a fact, that money and the appropriate distribution of money in our political system is necessary to have the opportunities to present the position of pharmacists on issues that affect our profession. Simply stated, we really need more pharmacists to make a financial commitment to the PAC. As I have said before, it is the responsibility of every pharmacist to support the pharmacy profession with your time, talent or treasure. At this time, we need your treasure. Please do not believe that if you don’t support pharmacy, others will do it for you. Pharmacy is truly a wonderful profession with a variety of opportunities for all of us. We need your financial help to maintain the vibrancy and stability of our profession. I believe that right behind family, faith and country, your profession should be the most treasured of the things you hold dear.
I have established a goal of raising $100,000 for our PAC, $25 from each practicing pharmacist in Kentucky. TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS FROM EVERY PHARMACIST IN KENTUCKY. Is it doable? YES. Will every pharmacist give twenty five dollars? NO. An individual can make a personal donation of up to $1,500.00 per year to the PAC. Will you please write your check today, so that we can continue to fight for desired representation in Frankfort?
Professionally yours,
Leon Claywell, Chair KPPAC
